My first impressions of the 5 principles speak to current brain research thinking and understanding about how the brain learns and seeks connections to create understanding. In my work with teachers and experiences with Alberta Education, the 5 principles are either embraced by teachers with curiosity and wonder or are viewed as this is not how math is taught nor does it support the new direction for the curriculum. It is interested that two opposing viewpoints are witnessed. That is my current challenge with mentoring educators … change is difficult and suspending judgement is an activity of trust and patience.
